'O Munaciello: Chi è lo spirito ribelle di Napoli? (E perché lo abbiamo fatto Pop) - Tra leggenda, brividi e design: vi raccontiamo la storia del personaggio più misterioso della nostra collezione.

'O Munaciello: Who is the rebellious spirit of Naples? (And why we made him Pop) - Between legend, thrills, and design: we tell you the story of the most mysterious character in our collection.

In Naples, when an object disappears and is never found again, or when unexpected money is found in an old jacket, the blame (or credit) always falls on one person alone: 'O Munaciello .

Of all the characters we've transformed into designs with SANTO POP® , the Munaciello is the one that carries the strongest charge of mystery and superstition. But who really is this "little monk" who inhabits the ancient palaces of Naples?

The Legend: Spirit or Reality?

Tradition holds that the Munaciello is a mischievous but sometimes benevolent spirit, dressed in a monk's robe, who enjoys playing pranks on the inhabitants of the house. If he likes you, he may leave you gold coins or find you winning lottery numbers. If he dislikes you... well, prepare yourself for broken dishes and invisible tripping.

But there is a fascinating historical explanation, which we love very much.

Centuries ago, Naples had "pozzari," highly agile workers who maintained the underground aqueducts. These workers accessed homes by emerging from wells or canals. Often, being poor, they accepted food in exchange for odd jobs, or sometimes "extracted" something if they weren't paid. They wore work clothes with hoods to protect them from the humidity, which in the dim light looked just like monks' robes.

The mystery is solved: hooded figures appearing and disappearing like ghosts in Neapolitan homes.

The Design of Mystery: Our Pop Munaciello

When we decided to create the Munaciello Pop , we faced a challenge: how do you draw a ghost?

We decided to focus entirely on the hood . In our design, the Munaciello's face is almost entirely hidden by the shadow of the large, pointed hood. You can't see his eyes, you can't see his expression. That's where his power lies: in never knowing if he's smiling at you or about to play a prank.

Its shape is small, compact, ready to run away or hide in a corner of the bookcase.

Having a Munaciello Pop at home is a tribute to the most esoteric and secretive Naples. And then, as we say here: "It's not true, but I believe it." Maybe it really does bring good luck.
