Who was San Gennaro? The Story of the Martyr
The story of Saint Januarius has its roots in the era of Christian persecution under Emperor Diocletian, at the beginning of the 4th century. Januarius was the bishop of Benevento, beloved and respected for his faith and charisma. During a pastoral visit to Pozzuoli, he learned of the arrest of his friend and deacon Sossio. Without hesitation, he went to visit him in prison to comfort him, an act of courage that sealed his fate.
Identified as a Christian, he too was arrested and sentenced to be torn to pieces by bears in the Pozzuoli amphitheater. Legend has it that the beasts, rather than attacking him, knelt meekly at his feet. Following this first miracle, the furious proconsul Dragontius ordered his beheading. The martyrdom of Saint Januarius occurred on September 19 , 305 AD.
The Miracle of San Gennaro: The Liquefaction of the Blood
The heart of devotion to San Gennaro is tied to the miracle of the liquefaction of his blood , an event that occurs three times a year and attracts the faithful and curious from all over the world. According to tradition, immediately after his beheading, a woman named Eusebia collected the martyr's blood in two vials. This blood, normally solid and dark in color, miraculously returns to a liquid state.
When does the blood of San Gennaro liquefy? The miracle of San Gennaro occurs on three specific dates, linked to the saint's history:
-
The Saturday before the first Sunday in May: To commemorate the first translation of his relics.
-
September 19: Anniversary of his martyrdom and the most important date for the feast of San Gennaro in Naples .
-
December 16: To commemorate the saint's miraculous intervention that stopped the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631.
The miracle of the blood of San Gennaro takes place in the Cathedral of Naples , in the splendid Cappella del Tesoro . When the blood liquefies rapidly, it is considered a good omen for the city. If the miracle is delayed or doesn't occur, popular superstition interprets it as a harbinger of misfortune.
